Hyderabad: On the occasion of the World Elephant Day, a scrumptious buffet of cakes made of ragi and rice decorated with fruits vegetables, sprouts and corn is laid for the elephants. The pachyderms were also cheered with sugar crane, pineapple, jaggery, coconut and green grass, The cakes were prepared by the animal keepers and the in-charge of elephants at Nehru Zoological Park.

World Elephant Day is an international annual event on August 12, dedicated to the preservation and protection of the world's elephants. It is a day to honor elephants, to spread awareness about the critical threats they are facing, and to support positive solutions that will help ensure their survival. Elephants play an important ecological role, including creating trails that work as fire breaks during brush fires, fertilizing the soil with manure, digging holes that create access to water for other animals, and much more. Without elephants, ecosystems are thrown out of balance.

The park has five elephants, one male and four females including the senior veteran Rani (82). According to the officials, all five elephants are in good health condition.
