Road fatalities in city dip by 13 per cent
Hyderabad Traffic Police on Thursday said that there had been considerable decrease in road fatalities in the city during the past nine months of this year.
Hyderabad: Hyderabad Traffic Police on Thursday said that there had been considerable decrease in road fatalities in the city during the past nine months of this year.
According to them, the city witnessed 29 lesser number ((about 13 per cent) of accidents this year.
Up to September 30, 196 fatal accidents reported this year as compared to 225 in 2018. As many as 206 persons died in accidents this year as compared to 232 last year.
Similarly, 80 pedestrians died this year as compared to 96 deaths last year.
Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Anil Kumar said that on the analysis of accident data it was found that most of the fatal accidents occurred due to over speeding (116 accidents), followed by rash and negligent driving (46 accidents).
As many as 12 drunken drive accidents, 8 negligence accidents and 6 minor driving fatal accidents occurred.
Anil Kumar said that decrease in fatal accidents were possible only due to the proactive identification of black spots and other accident-prone areas and co-ordination with the stakeholders.
Additional CP (Traffic) said 80 black spots were identified based on the accident data of 2018 to improve the safety of commuters and pedestrians in the city.
He said that this year they identified another 60 black spots on the accident data of 2019 till July and carried out joint inspections along with stakeholders like GHMC, HRDCL, R & B, NHAI etc.
In addition, they took various corrective measures at several black spots such as installation of guard railing along the service road of NH-44 opposite to MMR Gardens, Bowenpally Check post; street lighting and road markings were restored on Tippukhana-Ramdevguda road; pedestrian guard railing provided on central median of Raj Bhavan Road; central median was constructed at Dathu Nagar at Midhani.
He added that flexis and signages placed at all Metro stations to encourage the pedestrians to cross the road by using Metro stations staircases, lifts and escalators.
Rumble strips were provided at the curves on NTR Marg and footpaths were renovated towards Lake side and road safety signages got erected in the limits of Toli Chowki and other parts of the city.
Hyderabad Traffic Police also conducted various awareness programmes on road safety this year and visited 174 educational institutions and created awareness among 88,721 students.
Last year they conducted awareness programmes in 1,069 educational institutions and educated 2.65 lakh students about road safety.
