Waltair Division installs the human body temperature measurement system on platform No 8 The scanner detects the body temperature and reports the result through a monitor

Visakhapatnam: In a step to contain the spread of Covid-19, minimise human contact and step up the surveillance, the Waltair Division has installed Artificial Intelligence (AI) based human body temperature measurement system at platform No 8 in Visakhapatnam railway station.

The system recognises human bodies and detects the body temperature, making life much easier for railway staff, especially in times of deadly epidemic. Armed with the thermal imaging camera that helps in capturing and detecting temperature, the scanner detects the body temperature, tracks the forehead and reports the result through a monitor.

It is not all. The system can perform fever screening through a scanner and can also detect those having a high temperature. "One of the main advantages of the system is that it can detect a large number of passengers at a time, using data from their physical condition, face identification and can also detect the temperature of a person wearing a surgical mask. Moreover, it can provide real-time, accurate inspection results in diverse environments," explains Jitendra Srivastava, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner of Railway Protection Force (RPF), Visakhapatnam.

At present, the system has been installed in three stations across East Coast Railways, including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Visakhapatnam at a cost of Rs 9 lakh each. Elaborating about the advantages of the system, Jitendra Srivastava says, "Passengers need not halt at the checkpoints for detection. The system ensures safety of the working staff and prevention of cross infection as the footfall is expected to touch 1 lakh a day post lockdown. The technology supports up to 128 GB TF card and cloud storage which aids in retrieving the data when required."

Further, to tighten the surveillance, Visakhapatnam railway station will have single entry and exit points at Platform No:8 (Gnanapuram gate) and Platform No:1 respectively.
