JAC opposes merger of Nuzvid with proposed Eluru district

Highlights

Political parties, civil society organisations and local people form Nuzvid JAC for pressurising the government to merge Nuzvid with Vijayawada district or Machilipatnam district

Vijayawada: Efforts made by the state government to make each Lok Sabha constituency as district in the State evokes opposition from political parties in Nuzvid assembly constituency as majority political parties are insisting that Nuzvid assembly segment should be merged with either Vijayawada district or Machilipatnam district and it should not be merged with Eluru district.

The political parties -- TDP, CPI, CPM, Jana Sena, BJP, Congress and civil society organisations and the local people were working in coordination under the banner of Nuzvid JAC to put the pressure on the government to merge Nuzvid assembly constituency with Vijayawada district due to political, geographical, historical and other reasons.

Before 2009 elections, Nuzvid assembly constituency was part of the Machilipatnam Lok Sabha segment.

Nuzvid was part of Krishna district for many decades and now common people and the political parties too insist that Nuzvid should be part of either Vijayawada or Machilipatnam district only. Nuzvid JAC has been formed to achieve the goal.

The objective of the Nuzvid JAC was to create awareness among the people on the significance of merging Nuzvid assembly constituency with Vijayawada district because the development of Nuzvid was associated with Vijayawada city.

Nuzvid people particularly the political leaders, traders, students and other sections of the society were deeply connected with Vijayawada though Nuzvid assembly constituency was in Eluru Lok Sabha constituency.

Nuzvid Assembly constituency TDP leader Kapa Srinivasa Rao has strongly insisted that Nuzvid assembly segment must be merged with either Vijayawada district or Machilipatnam district. He suggested the alternative that the third district 'Nuzvid Krishna' district should be created to keep the 'Krishna' district name intact. He regretted that Krishna name is associated with the people for many decades and now it would vanish if two new districts are created with names of Machilipatnam district and Vijayawada district.

He said though Eluru was very near compared to Vijayawada, but the hearts of the people and the political leaders are associated with Krishna district and Vijayawada only.

Nuzvid JAC honorary president N Ibrahim said that they would strongly oppose the merging of Nuzvid assembly constituency with the proposed Eluru district, which may be formed as per the assurance given by Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy before the polls that each Lok Sabha segment will be made a separate district.

Ibrahim said that due to coronavirus pandemic people are not coming out but the JAC was trying to create awareness among the people on why Nuzvid assembly constituency should be merged with Vijayawada district and its advantages. He said Vijayawada was the capital for five years and the people of Nuzvid has strong bond with Vijayawada city and they continue the association intact in future also.

Political leaders in Nuzvid strongly feel that that they were marginalised by leaders in Eluru as most of the assembly constituencies in Eluru Lok Sabha segment were in West Godavari and only two segments were in Krishna

district.

P Satyababu, local TDP leader and active member of JAC said that the JAC would intensify the struggle for merging of Nuzvid with proposed Vijayawada district.

Vijayawada Central MLA and YSRCP leader Malladi Vishnu hoped that Nuzvid Assembly constituency may be merged with Vijayawada district only. He said there was hope that the state government will concede to the demand of the local people in reorganisation of districts.
