The United Nations member states adopted a resolution on 12th April 2018, at the 72nd session of General Assembly Resolution A/Res/72/272, to declare 3rd June as the "World Bicycle Day" which will be observed annually.

This resolution was mainly supported by Turkmenistan. The idea for global " World Bicycle Day" was propagated by Leszek J.Sibilski, who is a professor of sociology and a former member of the Polish National Olympic Cycling Team.

World Bicycle Day 2019 will be celebrated on Monday, 3rd June.
This day will be observed by all the bicyclers with great enthusiasts across the globe with excitement and fun. The aim of the event will mainly focus on devoting particular attention to the bicycle in the current era of automobiles.
The mobility needs of people who talk and cycle -often the majority of citizens in a city continue to be overlooked. LET US ALL KNOW A BIT OF HISTORY BEHIND THE WORLD BICYCLE DAY- AND WHO ACTUALLY MADE IT HAPPEN
The great man who first observed This World Bicycle Day is Professor Leszek J. Sibilski. He has been a member of the polish national cycling team for ten long years. He also has an experience as a sports reporter, covering major cycling events throughout the globe. He is also a social activist and had been advocating in the UN, the rights for persons, with disabilities.
Professor Sibilski ventured into a project to study the role of bicycles in development. He had no idea if the project would inspire a massive advocacy effort to have the United Nations designate a day to promote the use of bicycle around the world.
He started with his two blogs initially, The first one he wrote in February 2015. The first blog he titles as " Cycling is Your business and everyone's business". The second Blog came a year later and is supposed to have hit the mark. The second blog was titled-"why is there no World Day for the Bicycle".
Two weeks after his second blog was released the professor got a fantabulous opportunity to present his case for " World Bicycle Day" at a "scientists for cycling" conference in Taipei, Taiwan. The presentation was well presented it was effective and fruitful, as the conference recognized that declaration of a "World Bicycle Day" was indeed justified.
The cause was supported by Turkmenistan, whose officials at the UN worked hard in cooperation with professor Sibilski to make the "World Bicycle Day" a reality. On 12 th April 2018, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution designating 3rd of June as the "World Bicycle Day"

UN officials, Diplomats, Cyclists, and athletes, expressed their views on a bicycle and its innumerable health benefits. They acknowledged the role of the bicycle as a tool to promote and achieve Sustainable Development Goals of 2030.
The CEO of the World Bicycle Relief, an organization which promotes the use of a bicycle as a mobilization and empowerment tool, even stressed on the fact that a bicycle could be a catalyst for holistic development.

INDIA also celebrated its First Bicycle Day with huge participation in cities like Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Bangalore.

D V Manohar, the chairman of Hyderabad Bicycle Club and the only Indian on Board of World Cycling Alliance, Brussels said, " We, the World Cycling Alliance and the European Cyclist Federation have been campaigning for a UN-designated World Bicycle Day since 2016. He had contributed considerably through the World Cycling Alliance to convince the UN to have a day dedicating to cycling. The All India Bicycling Federation in association with Smartbike Mobility Pvt Ltd will be organizing various cycling events across India on June 3 to celebrate World Bicycle Day, the largest cycling event being in New Delhi. The World Cycling Alliance, Brussels, which has been lobbying for a World Bicycle Day, announced that the United Nations has accepted its request unanimously and declared June 3rd as International World Bicycle Day. The resolution was adopted by a consensus of 193 Member states on April 12, 2018, during the 72nd Regular Session of UN General Assembly, in New York City. The declaration invites all Member States and relevant stakeholders to celebrate and promote awareness of cycling on World Bicycle Day. The declaration encourages the Member States to devote particular attention to the bicycle in their development strategies and to include the bicycle in international, national, subnational and regional development policies and programs.
