5,638 cases booked for drunk driving in Dec

Hyderabad: A total of 5,638 drunk and drive cases including 3,287 (under the limits of Rachakonda Police Commissionerate) and 2,351 (Under the limits of Cyberabad Police Commissionerate) were booked this month. With the rise in the number of accidents in past few months, the police have increased their vigilance to monitor the drink and drive cases.

Md Tajuddin Ahmed, DCP (Traffic), Rachakonda, said that, due to COVID-19, the checking of drink and drive cases was not happening. But it has been found that drivers were under the influence of alcohol in most of the accidents happened. So, we resumed the check. Those caught during the drive are counselled by the NGO's in Traffic Training Institute in LB Nagar and later they are charged and produced before the court."

Similarly, the Cyberabad traffic police has also conducted regular checks to penalise the violators. They are being charged and all of them would either be penalised with Rs 10,000 or imprisonment up to six months if it was their first offence or Rs 15,000 fine or imprisonment of up to two years, if it was their second or subsequent offence.

The official of Cyberabad traffic police further said that the driving licenses of all the offenders were seized and were sent to the concerned RTOs for suspension for three months for their first offence and permanent revocation in cases of the second or subsequent offence.
