The "Swachhata Pakhwara" is being observed from September 16 to October 2, leading to its culmination on Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary, which would be observed as Community Service Day, involving the participation of all stakeholders.

Followed by the pledge, a signature campaign was also launched by the general manager to bring awareness and reiterating commitment towards practicing Swachhata program, in the presence of SCR Additional General Manager John Thomas, principal heads and other senior officials.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has desired that Indian Railways should lead this initiative. The Railway Minister has been monitoring the reports of several such drives being uploaded on E-Drishti and other dashboards.

As part of 'Swachhata Pakhwara,' SCR will undertake 'Massive Shramdaan' across the zone on Tuesday, with the main focus on 'Collection of Plastic Waste' to eliminate the plastic pollution on the railway premises.

SCR has provided 54 plastic bottle crushing machines at 35 major stations to ensure disposal of plastic bottles. Similar machines will be shortly provided at many other stations. SCR has been focusing on discouraging the usage of single-use plastic by rail users on its premises and trains.

Only recyclable plastic bottles not less than 50 microns are permitted for use as per Plastic Waste Management Rule 2016 (Amended 2019). Instructions were issued to all the divisions on plastic waste management. Campaigns are also being conducted to create public awareness on the removal of plastic waste.
