Visakhapatnam: Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) received a lioness from Sakkarbaug Zoological Garden, Gujarat as a part of the animal exchange programme.

The IGZP received a 2.5-year-old lioness in exchange of a pair of wild dogs to Sakkarbaug Zoological Garden. It will be a major attraction for the visitors at the zoo.

The new inmate is under the care and supervision of the zoo authorities and was kept in quarantine after its arrival on Friday midnight.

As per the standard protocol, the new animal will be kept in quarantine. “The lioness will be displayed to the visitors once the quarantine period gets completed. The animal exchange programme aims at facilitating the breeding programme for lions at the IGZP in collaboration with Sakkarbaug Zoo. By exchanging animals for breeding purposes, we not only enhance the genetic vitality but also share knowledge and expertise in animal care and management,” mentioned Dr. Nandani Salaria, curator of the IGZP.
