New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday that the new farm Bills, that were passed in the Rajya Sabha on Sunday, will change the economic condition of farmers. Terming the passage of the farm Bills and the change in the farming sector the "need of 21st century India", Modi said the farmers would now be able to sell their produce at any rate and anywhere they want.

Modi assured the farmers that the farm Bills are not against the mandis (agricultural markets), and the government procurement of their produce and Minimum Support Price (MSP) will continue as before.

The Rajya Sabha passed the Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020 and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020, through voice vote amid the ruckus caused by Opposition protests.

"On Sunday, two farm bills were passed in the Parliament. I congratulate my farmers. This change in the farming sector is the need of the present hour and our government has brought this reform for the farmers," the Prime Minister said.

"These farm Bills will empower the farmers to freely trade their produce anywhere.

I want to make it clear that these bills are not against the mandis. Farmers can now sell their produce at any cost they want. They would now be free to sell their products anywhere they want. New farm bills will change the economic status of the farmers," Modi said.

"I want to assure farmers that minimum support price, govt procurement of their produce will continue. The mandis and the MSP will continue. It is the NDA government which has continuously worked to modernize the agricultural mandis of the country," Modi said.

The Prime Minister went on to slam the Opposition for "misleading" the farmers across the country. He also took a dig at the Opposition that has been protesting the new farm Bills, saying the ones demonstrating against the new agriculture Bills never tried to implement Swaminathan Committee Report.
