Governments have resorted to various techniques including spraying chemicals manually and using drones and helicopters. A UP farmer came up with his own innovation to drive locusts away. A video of his creative application was shared by a senior police official from the state, Rahul Srivastava.

The device consists of a plastic bottle with a fan and a box fixed to a pole. As the fan begins to rotate with the wind, a stick keeps rattling the drum-like box creating a loud noise. Locusts, it is said, get driven away by the loud noise.

Entering Rajasthan from Pakistan, the desert locust is a migratory pest which can travel up to 150 km in a day. The locust swarms originate in the Arabian desert, come into Iran from Iraq and Sudan. From Iran, they travel to Balochistan and Pakistan before entering India.

Locusts travel in swarms of millions, which over a distance, break up into smaller swarms. They feed on everything green including leaves, flowers, fruit, crops of all kinds, bark, stems, among other things. Each locust can eat up to its own weight and large swarms clear out huge fields in a matter of no time.
