New Delhi: Senior Congress leader V Hanumantha Rao, here on Monday celebrated Congress president, Sonia Gandhi's 73rd birthday by distributing sweets and onions to the poor at Telangana Bhavan.

Though Sonia Gandhi herself asked the cadres not to celebrate her birthday, Hanumantha Rao said it was his duty to do so because her birthday was also an occasion for celebrating the announcement of Telangana State formation a decade ago.

It may be recalled that the then Union Minister P Chidambaram announced the process of AP bifurcation on Sonia's birthday itself.

Rao cut a cake amid a gathering of the Congress workers and distributed sweets and onions to the poor. Also, staged a protest against the high price of onions.

He demanded that the Telangana government should follow the example set by some chief ministers, who had ordered procurement and sale of onions on subsidy in their States as in AP.

Wishing Sonia Gandhi a long life, he said only Congress has the capacity to deliver a pro-poor governance in the country.
