Tata Motors announced the launch of their new sub-brand called TaMo (short for Tata Motors) last week. Specially crafted to speed-up all the work that goes into making passenger vehicles, right from concept to production, TaMo will help Tata Motors develop new technologies, business models and partnerships in order to define future mobility solutions.
The basis of TaMo is to develop passenger vehicles on the basis of low volume, low investment model to provide fast tracked proves of technologies and concepts. As per Tata Motors, “TAMO will act as an open platform to network with global startups and leading tech companies, to get access to trends, innovations and solutions, for the design of exciting future products and services.
For the rapidly changing automotive environment, TAMO will transform the experience of interfacing and interacting with customers and the wider community. TAMO will provide a digital eco-system, which will be leveraged by Tata Motors to support the mainstream business in the future.”
Speaking about the first car to be unveiled under the TaMo brand name, it will be the TaMo Futuro Sportscar concept which will debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.
This mid engined, two seater sportscar under the TaMo sub-brand, will be priced at Rs 25 lakh and will be revealed in concept format. Tata Tamo Futuro sportscar will be positioned as a halo model signaling its exclusivity. It will be a limited edition model restricted to just 250 units and might go on sale sometime in the middle of next year.
TaMo Futuro sports car can be seen in the leaked teaser image above. Though it is going to be a budget sportscar, expect the engine to be the same 1.2 liter Revotron which powers the Bolt and Zest petrol variants, but turbocharged to deliver 180 hp power. Performance will be accentuated due to the fact that the company plans on keeping kerb weight under 800 kgs while power to weight ratio will also be balanced for added efficiency. The new TaMo Futuro will be built out of composite plastics and aluminum to achieve this lighter weight.
The company promises to keen prices well within affordable limits and hence the use of more expensive carbon fiber might be avoided. Entire designing of the Tata Tamo Futuro sportscar has been conducted in-house with Marcello Gandini being responsible for its chassis construction.
This is not the first time Tata Motors will be debut a sports car. In fact, at the 2000 Geneva Motor Show, they had unveiled Aria Sportscar Concept, and later the Aria Coupe Concept at the 2001 Geneva Show. None of them actually materialized, and the Aria name was given to MPV. This time around, the sportscar plans seems more promising.
