ECIL launches ‘Nirbhaya’- a GPS-based tele distress alarm device

Hyderabad: With an aim to protect women from the rising sexual assault cases, Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) has launched a unique product ‘Nirbhaya’, a GPS-based Tele Distress Alarm Device. Releasing the innovative product at Anushakti Nagar in Mumbai on Saturday, Dr Ratan Kumar Sinha, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) said, “Self reliance is the guiding beacon of DAE and brings out innovative products regularly through in house Research and Development. One such product is “Nirbhaya” which would immensely benefit a large section of society.”

This simple device would be very helpful to children, students, working women and senior citizens, he said.

‘Nirbhaya’, which is developed at BARC, Mumbai and marketed by ECIL, is a compact electronic device that, just on pressing a switch, sends information to near and dear ones, including police, in case of severe distress or fear of attack.

It automatically sends a pre-formatted message through SMS along with its location to pre-selected five cell phone numbers – of parents, relatives, friends, family doctor and police - thus assuring that help is on hand when needed.

Dr R Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor to Govt of India, P Sudhakar, Chairman & Managing Director, ECIL, SS. Bajaj, Chairman, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, CK. Pithawa, Director (E&I), BARC, Anil Kumar, Inspector General (Security), DAE and high ranking officials from DAE Units were present at the occasion.
