Hyderabad: Premature birth of babies has become a leading cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity in India, said Dr Dinesh Chirala, Director (Intensive Care) at Rainbow Hospitals, and a member of Indian Foundation for Premature Babies (IFPB).

Dr Dinesh stressed the need to enhance awareness about pre-term births. “Unfortunately, this problem has not been recognised as a serious one in the country”, he said, noting that the trend of premature babies was rising even in the city of Hyderabad.

As per World Health Organisation (2012), India tops the list of 10 nations contributing to 60 per cent of the world’s premature deliveries. The rate of pre-term births in India is approximately 21 per cent. In Hyderabad, it is around 29 per cent, he said.

According to Dr Dinesh, India topped the list even in terms of death rate among the premature babies. Around three lakh such babies were dying every year due to various complications. He feels that if awareness about spacing between two children is created, the problem could be solved to a great extent.

The pattern of premature deliveries is common in both marginalised as well as affluent sections, he feels.
