Tirupati: A police constable and a home guard were found murdered in the Gandhinagar forest area near Palamaner on Monday. The deceased were identified as constable Jawahar Naik (27) and home guard S Deva. While Naik’s body bore stab injuries, Deva was throttled to death.
Both had gone to the forest under Palamaner police limits, following a complaint of a clash between two groups. As there was no communication from them and their mobiles were switched off, police officials suspected foul play and launched a search for them.
The bodies were found 1 km away from the Chennai-Bengaluru national highway. Police suspect the killings could be the handiwork of the clashing groups or red sanders smugglers. Filmi-style chase Meanwhile, Tirupati Task Force SI Ahsok Kumar and four constables suffered injuries when they were attacked by a gang of red sander smugglers.
On a tip-off, the police tried to take control of a truck with a stock of 48 red sander logs at Sindu Hotel Circle in Tirupati on Monday. However, the truck driver sped away with the police giving him a hot chase. Even as the police were involved in the chase, they were followed by a gang of smugglers in a car.
After a hot chase, the police closed in on the truck at Mittakandriga village in Ramachandrapuram mandal, 12 km from Tiruapti. While the police were checking the truck, the driver escaped. Soon, the smugglers arrived on the scene and beat up the police indiscriminately with sticks.
In the melee, the truck driver rushed back and took off in the vehicle. The police opened fire in the air and wriggled themselves of the smugglers’ hold and went after the truck. But, the attackers, too, followed in the hot pursuit of the cops. The filmi style chase and bouts continued and the cops finally had the upper hand. The truck driver and the smugglers managed to run away, though.
Tirupati Urban SP SV Rajasekhara Babu, along with Task Force DSP Udayakumar, visited Mittakandriga area. He ordered the district police to launch a manhunt for the smugglers. Ramachandrapuram police registered a case.
