Hyderabad: As per the instructions by AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi to take measures to win back the Kapu into its fold, PCC president Botcha Satyanarayana on Monday assured the Joint Action Committees (JAC) of all Kapu communities comprising Kapu, Telaga, Balija and other sub-castes that the government would examine the demand to accord Backward Class status to them.

Botcha held a meeting with some Kapu leaders at Gandhi Bhavan when they staged a sit-in at Gandhi Bhavan demanding that the Congress party fulfil its promise that was mentioned in its 2009 election manifesto. They also submitted a memorandum to Botcha. In their memorandum, Kapu leaders charged the Congress Party with turning a blind eye to the issue of according BC status to the community, which constitutes about 20 per cent of the total population in the State.

They said if the government did not take a positive decision they would vote against it in the 2014 elections.

After the meeting, Dasari Ramu, coordinator of the JAC along with Pilla Venkateswara Rao, Kapu Nadu chief, said that the PCC president had assured them that a meeting of Kapu lawmakers would be convened soon to take a decision on the issue.
