Hyderabad: Around 1,100 eminent people joined the walk – on creating awareness about leprosy - from Sanjeeviah Park to Jal Vihar, organised by LEPRA Society here on Sunday.

Dr J Subbanna, Chief Executive in-charge LEPRA Society, said lndia accounted for 58 per cent of new cases of leprosy in the world. “One new case is detected every 5 minutes, including 10,000 children every year. The people affected by leprosy still face discrimination in the society and a collective effort to fight against it is the need of the hour,” he added.

Speaking about myths that hamper the effective treatment, Andrew Mc Allister, British Deputy High Commissioner, Hyderabad, observed , “Myths like leprosy is the result of past sins, immoral behaviour and affected persons should be ostracised should be tackled.”

Former India cricketer VVS Laxman appealed to spread the message for early detection and treatment of leprosy by Multi Drug Therapy and requested everyone to take a pledge to work towards a leprosy-free society in the country and treat persons affected by leprosy with dignity and compassion.

People affected by leprosy, senior citizens, health officials, volunteers, Bharat Scouts and Guides, PG College of Science, OU Saifabad, Andhra Mahila Sabha, Vignan College Vadlamudi, Guntur, Yashoda School of Nursing, NSKK School, lndira Priyadarshini College, Koti Women’s College, Corporate like lDBl, NTPC, Beam Fibers, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, JK Fenner, KPC Projects and Sree Krishna Enterprises took part in the walk.
