Hyderabad: The 124th birth anniversary of Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar was observed with solemn ceremony across the city on Monday, particularly at places with a sizable population of Dalits.

APCC president N Raghuveera Reddy offered floral tributes to Dr BR Ambedkar at Indira Bhavan. Earlier, he garlanded the Ambedkar statue at Tank Bund along with D Manikya Varaprasada Rao, Kasu Venkata Krishna Reddy and others.

Raghuveera said on the occasion the Congress was known for lending a helping hand to the needy and poor. Welfare and development were two main arms of the Congress party, he claimed.

The Congress was emulating the ideals of Ambedkar, he said, adding that Ambedkar had always worked for the uplift of Dalits, destitute and deprived classes. It was due to Ambedkar’s persistent efforts that the Dalits and tribals joined the mainstream, he opined.

Other prominent leaders who garlanded the statue at Tank Bund were Bandaru Dattatreya from the BJP, MP Anjan Kumar Yadav and Danam Nagender from the Congress. At Ravindra Bharathi, leaders and bureaucrats marked their presence. Telangana Praja Front leader Gaddar, chairman of the Ambedkar Bhavan Dr K Nagaiah were also present. As many as 200 were given Dalit Ratna awards.

Insurance Corporation Employees Union Hyderabad division organised a seminar at Hyderabad divisional office on ‘Social issues – Dr BR Ambedkar’s ideology.’ The chief guest of the meeting was K Vinay Kumar, eminent journalist and former editor, Prajashakti daily. V Ramesh, general secretary, AIIEA, B Rajender Kumar, president South Central Zone Insurance Employees' Federation (SCZIEF), Clement Das, general secretary, SCZIEF, addressed the gathering. Around 150 employees participated in the meeting. The State Bank of India (SBI) represented by its General Manager Ashwin Mehta and Deputy General Manager Ajith Kumar Jain participated in celebrations at Tank Bund and were among those who garlanded the statue.
