Thousands of asthma patients across the state and country lined up at the Exhibition Grounds on Sunday as the fish ‘prasadam’ was administered by the Bathini Goud family. The ‘prasadam’ is believed to cure asthma and other breathing disorders. It is being administered by the family for the last 169 years. The event kicked off at 5.30pm with the commencement of ‘Mrigasira Karthi’, which heralds the onset of monsoon. The medicine will be provided up to 5.30pm today.

The medicine is placed in the mouth of a live mural fish and then slipped into the mouth of the patient. The treatment, which is based on a secret herb formula, draws thousands every year. It is believed that if taken for three consecutive years, it cures asthma.

People suffering from respiratory disorders started queuing up from Friday itself and camped in temporary shelters built for them. Telangana Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma already reviewed the arrangements at the venue and directed various departments to ensure the safe and hassle-free distribution of the medicine. While the fisheries department has kept thousands of live mural fish for sale at its counters at the Exhibition Grounds, the APSRTC is running special buses to take people from the Imliban and JBS stations and Secunderabad and Hyderabad Railway Stations to the venue.

Considering the severe heat conditions, the water works department is providing free drinking water around the grounds. Several social organisations – such as the Agarwal Samaja and Haryana Nagarik Samaj –supplied free food for patients.

The Bathini Goud family advised patients to strictly follow up on medicines for effective treatment. “Another medicine must be taken thrice in a period of 45 days and patients are supposed to follow a strict diet as prescribed,” said the Bathini brothers.

“This medicine, which is given at the venue after the fish ‘prasadam’ is taken, should be administered on the days of Arudra, Punarvasu and Pushyami, which fall at a gap of 15 days each,” advised the family members.
