Hyderabad: Chief Ministers of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on Monday pleaded with the Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh to extend liberal help to the farming sector.

The Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao urged the Union Minister to extend centre's assistance in setting up of Horticulture and Veterinary universities besides establishing soil research centres and godowns in Telangana region.

Earlier the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu hosted lunch for Singh and explained to him about the problems the farmers in Andhra Pradesh were facing in the bifurcated Andhra Pradesh. He also drew the attention of the Union Minister towards the impending danger of a possible drought and sought liberal assistance from the centre to bail out the farmers.

During their meeting, Naidu requested the Union Minister to sanction Rs. 500 crore for drip irrigation. Naidu also wanted the Minister to help setting up Agricultural University in Guntur. The Union Minister said agriculture is the mainstay of AP state and lands here are good for farming. According to State Agriculture Minister P Pulla Rao, Singh had assured that the centre would favourably consider requests made by the Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, addressing party workers at state BJP office, the Union Minister said the Centre would announce a new agriculture insurance scheme in about six months after taking inputs from State governments and farmers’ organisations.

He felt that the farmers were not getting proper benefit from the present 'Krishi Bima Yojana' (agriculture insurance scheme). "We have sent letters to all Chief Ministers, seeking their advice so that farmers get maximum benefit from the scheme," he said. Singh said he would soon hold a meeting of Agriculture Ministers and will take inputs from Chief Ministers, State Agriculture Ministers and farmer outfits and announce a new 'Krishi Bima Yojana' in about six months for the benefit of farmers," he said, addressing a meeting at the BJP office here.
