Hyderabad: Union Minister for Health, Dr Harsh Vardhan, is said to have approved the site for establishing the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Andhra Pradesh at Mangalagiri in Guntur district, AP Health and Medical Education Minister Kamineni Srinivas said in statement on Friday.

AIIMS will be set up in an area of 193 acres at a cost of Rs 1,200 crore, the Minister informed. According to sources in the State health department, Centre has put a condition of a minimum of 200 acres for AIIMS, but due to efforts put in by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Kamineni Srinivas, the Centre has given approval for 193 acres identified by the State government.

A high-level meeting has been convened by the Union Health Ministry on October 21. A team of officials from the State, including Principal Secretary (Health and Medical Education) LV Subrahmanyam, MD of APMSIDC, Director of Medical Education (DME) and others will take part in the meeting.

The meeting will dwell on the DPR to be submitted by the State government. Central officials will give the format in which the DPR has to be submitted. Aspects like sources of water, power supply and internal roads are to be included in the DPR, State health ministry sources have said.

Higher educational institutions including an AIIMS were promised in the AP Reorganization Act 2014, which was passed by the previous UPA-2 government. Though the UPA government expressed its readiness to establish six AIIMS-like institutes across the country, the initiative could not make much progress.
