  • Another super cyclone will be devastating for Vizag

Visakhapatnam: As north coastal Andhra Pradesh is still floundering to return to normalcy after battered by Hudhud, another super cyclone is brewing in the Bay of Bengal. To be christened as Ashobaa (Sri Lankan name), it is now a well marked low pressure over south east Bay of Bengal and neighborhood with associated upper air cyclonic circulation extending upto 7.6 km above mean sea level.

Cyclone Warning Centre officials said the sytem would concentrate into a depression during next 24 hours and cross the north Andhra coast between Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam on November 12 as a super cyclone, exactly a month after the Hudhud crossed the Visakhapatnam coast.

The official machinery is gearing up to meet the fresh situation. Handling Hudhud has been a rich experience and the officials said they would not take any chance for this fresh cyclone. A senior revenue official said basic facilities are still to be restored and there has been erratic power and water supply in many parts of the city. Many slum areas are still in dark and the residents have been complaining of lack of water and severe power cuts.

If Ashobaa makes a landfall in the city like Hudhud, it would be devastating. What all the work we have done on a war footing, would be demolished again,’’ said another official. Meanwhile, minimum temperature fell at a few places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and one or two places in Rayalaseema. Chintapalle and adjacent villages recorded low temperatures and it would further go down during the crossing of cyclone. There was no rainfall on Wednesday in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. So far four cyclones crossed Visakhapatnam since 1970. A severe cyclone crossed Bhimili coast, about 23km from Visakhapatnam on October 3, 1983, October 11, 1996 and October 12, 2014.
