Cancel public hearing on PCPIR: CPM

Visakhapatnam: The district unit of Communist Party of India (Marxist) here on Wednesday demanded the government to cancel the public hearing on the proposed Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemicals Investment Region (PCPIR) at Nakkapalli on December 18 as there was no clarity in the project details.
Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, CPM State executive committee member Ch. Narasing Rao and district secretary K Lokanadham questioned the government how it released the notification stating that 1.5 lakh acres of land would be acquired for the largest project in the country without giving any clarity.
They pointed out that unless there were details about which the company would be set up and wherein the total extent of 640 sq km the effect of pollution levels could not be identified. It was clearly mentioned in the Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation Act, 2013, that conduct of a Gram Sabha was mandatory where one-fourth of the land or houses was acquired from a particular village.
Mr Narasing Rao alleged that people from hundreds of villages would be forced to vacate due to the project. The CPM was severely condemning the ‘namesake’ public hearing to be held with the help of police, he said. He recalled that stay orders from the High Court were in force in Nakkapalli area where the government had proposed to acquire nearly 2,000 acres and therefore, conducting a public hearing in that area would amount to ‘Contempt of Court’.
With the setting up of poisonous, chemical and dangerous industries in the coastal belt in the name of PCPIR, the ground water table would be contaminated and the livelihood of fisherfolk would be destroyed, Mr Narasing Rao said. He asked the government not to convert the fertile coastal area into a dumping area in the guise of industrial development and hold Gram Sabhas to elicit the opinion of the villagers. Any attempt to go ahead with the public hearing in contravention of the rules would be thwarted, the CPM leaders warned.
