Nellore: The Municipal sanitation contract workers staged a demonstration on Saturday in front of the Municipal Corporation office here in protest against the move to cancel the contract agreement of the sanitary contract workers and introduce new system. The Municipal Corporation council adopted a resolution for cancellation of the contract.

The contract workers fumed over the council recommending the ending of the contract as it would lead to loss of employment for them. They protested at the main gate and tried to intrude into the office compound. There was a commotion at the main gate and arguments took place between the police and the protesters.

A few women protesters were injured in the scuffle. Women workers hit out at the Mayor and other members of the council for passing the resolution for introducing tender system, thus throwing them out of work. Later the sanitation contract workers took up a big rally in the town under the leadership of AP Municipal Workers and Employees Union, CITU. Nellore Rural Ex-MLA Anam Vivekananda Reddy also participated in the protest along with the workers.

The enraged workers gheroed the Mayor and TDP Corporators at the Municipal Corporation office. Responding to the situation of the contract workers, Nellore Municipal Corporation Mayor Abdul Azeez promised that the contract workers would not be put to any injustice and a decision would be taken in the council after elaborate discussions about their problems.
