DELAY IN LAND ACQUISITION FOR PROJECTS

Eluru: West Godavari Collector K Bhaskar on Saturday warned the officials of immediate action if they adopted negligent attitude in land acquisition for irrigation projects in the district. Addressing a review meeting on irrigation projects, he expressed anguish over lack of progress in acquiring lands despite weekly reviews. Except stating that the land acquisition work was in progress at every review meeting, the officials were found ‘lacking in commitment and accountability’.

The Collector pulled up the Special Deputy Collector stating that although 55 acres were identified seven years ago for Yerrakaluva, the lands were yet to be taken possession of and for the delay in making proposals under the new Land Acquisition Act. He said there should be no delay of even one day in acquiring land for irrigation projects. The performance of the staff in the land acquisition wing was being regularly reviewed.

If the lethargic employees did not improve, they should be prepared to face the music. If they had any problems with farmers and people, they should sort them out along with Tahsildars, RDOs and police officials. Proposals to pay compensation for taking over houses and other structures as part of land acquisition should also be prepared, the Collector stated

Bhaskar advised the officials to pay compensation to farmers within 48 hours of getting permission, besides for the loss of crops, trees and other structures. “The land should be handed over to the Irrigation Department within 48 hours. The department should launch the work within two days,” he said. The Collector called for expediting the rehabilitation of persons affected by the Polavaram project. Houses for them should be constructed fast and handed over. “Only the district-level officials should attend the next Saturday meeting and not their subordinates,” he said.
