In a major embarrassment to AP Government, the Hyderabad High court has asked the AP government asked as to why a murder case had not been filed over the killing of 20 alleged sandalwood smugglers who were shot dead in the forests of Chittoor earlier this week.

The Hyderabad High Court asked the government to furnish an explanation by Monday, the result of a case brought by human rights activists. They say the victims, who were all from Tamil Nadu, were killed in a staged encounter, and not in self-defence, as claimed by the police. The Andhra Pradesh police says that all this is an attempt to demoralise police personnel in the field.

Andhra Pradesh Forest Minister B Gopala Krishna Reddy said that the government has evidence that "those killed were habitual offenders" in trading red sandalwood illegally. With angry protests and a call for a fair inquiry in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has written to his counterpart, O Panneerselvam, assuring him that the deaths are being investigated urgently and thoroughly.
