Revenue Minister against forcible land acquisition

Hyderabad: In a major embarrassment to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, his deputy K E Krishnamurthy who holds Revenue portfolio fired a salvo on Thursday against the government by opposing the land acquisition policy for building capital.

Stating that there was enough land bank with the government, the Deputy Chief Minister said it would be better if the land acquisition was not taken up forcibly. “There is nothing wrong if the farmers come forward voluntarily and surrender their land,” he said. KEK feels that the concerns of the farmers were legitimate and acquiring their land for the new capital would be wrong without addressing their issues.

“We should go ahead with the land acquisition only after the farmers say that they are satisfied with the compensation package,” he said. In the past too, KEK had taken potshots at the government on the land acquisition issue. He was peeved at the decision of the government not to locate the capital region in the Rayalaseema region.

It may be mentioned here that KEK was not part of the panel on the Capital Regional Development Authority or any committee related to capital building. Even though KEK handles the crucial Revenue portfolio, the entire responsibility of land pooling and land acquisition was entrusted with Municipal Administration Minister P Narayana.

Against the backdrop of this scenario, the Deputy Chief Minister gave vent to his ire over Narayana. “The Revenue Department has no role to play in land acquisition or in construction of the capital. It was Narayana who is taking care of everything,” he said speaking exclusively to The Hans India.

When asked what he would do if the government goes ahead with the land acquisition forcibly, Krishnamurthy said, “I am confident that the government will convince the farmers as suggested by Jana Sena leader Pawan Kalyan and then acquire the land.”
The comments of KEK on the eve of state cabinet meeting scheduled to be held on Saturday assumes importance as he has been demanding that the Rayalaseema region be given Rs 1 lakh crore package for development.
