Rural empowerment is the need of the hour as the country is having highest number of youth, observed Union Minister of State for Science and technology Y Sujana Chowdary. Delivering the 12th endowment lecture of Yarlagadda Sreeramulu on ‘Development Mantra for 21st Century: Broad-based rural empowerment’, organised by the Institutions of Engineers in Vijayawada on Saturday, the Union Minister expressed concern over neglect of rural areas. He said that the agriculture sector of the rural India should be developed alongside Industry and service sector. The rural youth should be provided employment opportunities in the vicinity of their villages. He said it is the right time to rationalise the policies and tailor them to create opportunities and jobs on one side and impart requisite skills and develop talents to grab the opportunities

Delivering the 12th endowment lecture of Yarlagadda Sreeramulu on ‘Development Mantra for 21st Century: Broad-based rural empowerment’, organised by the Institutions of Engineers in Vijayawada on Saturday, the Union Minister expressed concern over neglect of rural areas. He said that the agriculture sector of the rural India should be developed alongside Industry and service sector. He said it is the right time to rationalise the policies and tailor them to create opportunities and jobs on one side and impart requisite skills and develop talents to grab the opportunities.

Agriculture should be made a profitable venture by improving food processing facilities. He said that the agriculture should be made drought-proof and minimum guaranteed income should be provided. The Minister said that he had adopted Ponnavaram village in Krishna district and appealed to engineers to visit the village and provide honest feedback on the measures he had taken for development of the village. He said former President APJ Abdul Kalam propounded the concept of Provision of Urban Amenities to Rural Areas (PURA). He said it is a comprehensive strategy which encompasses providing urban infrastructure and services in rural hubs to create economic opportunities outside the cities.

Sujana Chowdary stressed the need for making real Dr MS Swaminathan’s evergreen revolution by using environmentally sustainable agriculture, sustainable food security and preservation of biodiversity. Institution of Engineers Vijayawada centre chairman M Kamaraju, secretary G Srinivasulu, Malaxmi group chairman Y Harischandraprasad and others were present.
