Tirupati: The political parties which never miss an opportunity to remain in limelight and keep up their popularity, now turned on Sankranti celebrations, to get closer to the people.

Accordingly, the politicos and their parties are conducting events like rangoli competitions and showcasing Gangireddulu on the occasion of the harvest festival in the pilgrim city. This was for more than one reason. First, it will help them to take their party to the people more so women, who are emerging as a formidable force during the electoral battles and to expand the party popularity and base.

Interestingly, the Left parties CPM and CPI which are hitherto confined to protests also not lagging behind with the parties like TDP and BJP are actively conducting the Hindu festival here to reach out to the people. The CPM organised ‘Intinta Rangavallulu’ in Sundaraiah Nagar, Yasoda Nagar, Madhura Nagar and Railway Colony where the streets were awash with colourful Muggulu with houses sporting the traditional rangoli amply revealing the artistic talents of the women. The party also conducted rangoli and musical chair competitions for women in Karnala Layout while CPI organised rangoli competitions in Vedanthapuram and Padmavathipuram locality.

BJP’s OBC Morcha also organised a rangoli competition for women at Indira maidanam. Not lagging behind, the TDP leaders Raja Reddy and K Balasubramanyam also organised rangoli contest. They conducted the festival celebrations including the shows of Gangireddulu and Haridasu while a cultural programme by girls was also held in a private school, heralding Sankranti.

Speaking to The Hans India, CPM district secretary K Kumar Reddy and CPI city secretary C Penchalaiah said that they were holding the contests to strengthen the bondage while BJP leader J Madhusudhan said they have held the programme to preserve and promote India’s ancient culture which is facing tough time due to growing consumerism coupled with the onslaught of western culture through TVs.
