Chittoor: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has reportedly agreed to sell the defunct Chittoor Cooperative Sugars to the Apollo Hospitals. The medical care company wants to construct a super-specialty hospital in the premises of sugar factory. But, sugarcane farmers are vehemently opposing the Chief Minister’s decision.

But, the management of the Apollo Hospitals has reportedly assured sugarcane farmers that they will be given due shares in the proposed super-specialty hospital besides medical care to their families at concessional rates, according to reliable information. It may be mentioned here that Chittoor Cooperative Sugars has been defunct for the last two years due to various reasons. The State government has arrived at a decision that sale of the sugar factory is the only option to clear its outstanding dues of Rs 103 crore. Some of the industrialists from the district have already started lobbying with the government to take over the sugar factory. At present, there are 12,000 share holders in the Chittoor Cooperative Sugars.

In an attempt to make Chittoor as smart city, the State government had already sanctioned more than 60 acres of land to the Apollo Hospitals to construct a medical college near Muthurevula which is located at a distance of 3 km from the city. Besides, stage has been set to hand over the District Government Hospital to Apollo Hospitals on lease.

Speaking to The Hans India, Chittoor Cooperative Sugars Managing Director Ramanjaneyulu admitted that the sale of the sugar factory is inevitable to clear the dues owned to banks and financial institutions. He pointed out that the farmers were not supplying their sugarcane produce to the factory as they lost faith in it. “We were unable to pay salaries for employees for the last 24 months,” he added. Sources said that modalities of handing over sugar factory to Apollo Hospitals likely to be finalised in the next week. Apollo Hospitals Founder-Chairman Dr Prathap C Reddy is the native of Aragonda, 16 km from Chittoor. He is keen on developing the city on all fronts.
