Minister of Civil Aviation P Ashok Gajapathi Raju said that the Centre was considering a plan to introduce cargo flights in Andhra Pradesh. Talking to reporters here at MP Maganti Babu’s camp office on Thursday, the Minister said the besides attracting the flight passengers, there is a need to concentrate on the cargo as well.

He stressed the need to utilise the cargo flights to transport costly medicines, fruits and flowers on a speedy way to destined areas. He pointed out that in Bangalore airport about 20 cargo flights transporting the rose flowers alone and in view of the demand to e-commerce, the government will encourage the cargo flight transport.

Ashok Gajapathiraju said that after modernisation of Shamshabad and Begumpet airports, the passengers’ traffic shored up. After the bifurcation of united Andhra Pradesh, the AP government is showing interest to modernise the airports including extending it and other issues.

He said to expand the airport at Gannavaram about 700 acres of land is needed. However, there is some problem with the expansion as the Krishna Canal and National Highway are nearer to the airport. He said if necessary, the Krishna Canal diversion would be taken up to develop the Gannavaram airport. For this, the Centre will sanction the funds and cooperate, he added.
