Hyderabad: After much dilly-dallying over the release of funds to the Polavaram Irrigation Project (PIP) things seem to have started looking up for the State government. According to sources in the State Water Resources Development and Irrigation Department, “Relentless efforts of the govt officials and the recent meeting of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu with Prime Minister Narendra Modi have brought some momentum on release of funds.” said official.

  • A State govt official says Centre will be releasing more funds for Polavaram project in a month or two
  • Attribute it to the relentless efforts of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu

Accordingly, the State government was informed that some more funds to the PIP would be released in a month or two. So far the expenditure on various works of PIP has been incurred from five accounts of Normal State Plan (NSP) and four accounts under the heads of Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP).

Besides, under another head of account, expenditure has been accounted for lands and buildings. In addition to the above, canals and distributaries, as well as few other categories of works have been met from three separate accounts under AIBP. Despite the Polavaram Management Authority (PMA) has been created after a year of the bifurcation of the United Andhra Pradesh, the PIP could only get meagre allocations felt the State government.

It was against this backdrop and following a recent meeting between the Chief Minister and the Prime Minister has given some push to the movement of files on release of additional funds to the PIP. Following these development, the State government has tweaked the head of accounts related to the PIP as it was a national project and that the funds has to come from as financial assistance from the Centre.

Accordingly, the expenditure on the PIP from now onwards would be released from two new head of accounts: Head of Account D.A. 4700-01-120 Polavaram Barrage, G.H. (11) State Development Plan and Head of Account D.A. 4700-01-120 Polavaram Barrage- GH (12) Central Assistance to State Development plan.
