Vizianagaram district has received 217 millimeters of rainfall during June against the normal rain fall of 131.5 MM. As per the meteorology department of the district, it has received 65 per cent of excess rains in June. Due to these rains tanks are filled up to brim level. 

Vizianagaram: With the monsoon advancing well, the State received adequate rainfall in June, prompting farmers to make arrangements for kharif. Sowing has picked up in last few days.

Apart from paddy, red gram, groundnuts are the other commercial crops which are being cultivated during this season in the State. As per the statistics, farmers in AP has sown paddy in around 17 lakh hectares during 2015 kharif season, and in this year it is around 16.5 lakh hectares.

Most of the paddy farmers prepare the seeds on their own, and only the commercial crops like groundnut, cotton, maize seeds are being purchased by farmers.

On the other side, small farmers are searching for private loans from the money lenders for investment. If they get the loans from banks, they need to pay only six per cent of interest, but the norms are so difficult to get the loans from banks, where as the private lenders collect 24 to 36 per cent of interest with no cumbersome process. Gajapathinagaram said: “I have taken Rs 75,000 loan from a private lender for 24 per cent interest. I need to pay the principle amount and interest after harvesting of the crops.” Vizianagaram district has received the excess rainfall in the month of June, and tanks, projects in the district are filled up with rain water. Entire district has received heavy rains for the past few days, due to low pressure in Bay of Bengal.

Vizianagaram joint director of Agriculture department K Leelavathi said: “We are prepared to face the kharif with all rangements. The farmers are happy with the recent rains. We are arranging enough stocks of fertilisers, pesticides.”

K Rami Naidu, a farmer from Bobbili mandal said: “We are happy to see the Vengalaraya Sagar project with water up to brim. We are hopeful of better harvest this year.”Komarada, G.L.Puram, Kurupam mandals have more than 100 per cent of excess rains in June.
