Addressing the AP Abhivrudhiki Kendram Sahakaram-Prathyeka Ardhika Package Pi Avagahana' Public Meeting in Kakinada on Saturday, Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu stated that the state does not qualify for special category status.

Stressing on the fact that only the states at the border, having forest areas, hilly locations and tribal population have been accorded the special status so far, the Minister said that backward states such as Odisha and Bihar are eligible for Special Status.

Mr Naidu further said that AP doesn't categorize accordingly but promised that the Centre would compensate Rs 22 crore revenue deficit to AP for a period five years. Giving more details, he said that the state would be receiving Rs 2.06 lakh crore in five years according to the recommendations of 14th Finance Commission.

Venkaiah Naidu added that AP would benefit more comparitively than the accordance of special status. He also clarified that Centre has taken complete responsibility of Polavaram project.
