With 1.50 crore target and 1.02 crore plants disbursement to various schools and government offices by the end of October completed, the social forestry wing of forest department is gearing up for the plantation for the year 2017.

Usually, distribution of plants begins during June at the time of schools reopening and picks up momentum with the disbursement to various government and private institutions and to farming community across the district during rainy season.

Under this programme the schools, colleges and other offices having compound wall and water facility are being selected to grow the plants to the required size and fit for distribution. On these grounds, more than 2,000 schools in rural areas and at mandal headquarters were found suitable for growing the plants.

Apart from these, several government offices which have spacious backyard facility were also identified for taking up mass growing of plants with active association of MGNREGS programme.

In order to safeguard the growth of plants at the identified schools, the Head Master at school level, MEO at mandal level, DyEO at division level and DEO at district level will take necessary steps to protect plants in respective areas in the capacity as nodal officers in active association with children of respective schools.

East Godavari divisional forest officer in social forestry wing AVSRK Appanna said that apart from the new plants at various schools, several departments who have put in the indent but did not lift the same due to different reasons are still lying in the schools.

“The children are doing a fabulous job in taking care of plants along with those provided employment under MGNREGS. We have sent reminder to government institutions which are supposed to lift the saplings for plantation in their respective places,” Raj, DFO clarified.
