Tirupati: Under the banner of Organisation for the Protection of Democratic Rights (OPDR), poor living in various slums have staged a dharna here on Thursday, demanding house sites and pensions to all eligible people. The homeless poor came in a rally from Bairagipatteda to Sub-Collector office where they organised a dharna.
Addressing the gathering, OPDR State committee member V Balu, Grameena Pedala Sangham (GPS) district secretary G Bhaskar said despite the tall promises by the political parties and successive governments, thousands of homeless poor are still living in slums in deplorable conditions while hundreds of eligible beneficiaries are also not getting pensions.
They demanded the government to take up issuing of house sites and pensions to all eligible poor in the city. A memorandum on the demands was later submitted to Administrative Officer.
