Pithapuram: Some un-identified persons caused damage to Ambedkar statue in P Thimmapuram on Sunday and hurled dung on it. This is the second incident in a row to take place in the district during the past four days. Dalit leaders expressed their ire over the incident.

The police suspected the involvement of some local unscrupulous elements behind the incident. Sniffer dogs pressed into serve led the police to Dalit colony.

According to the police, altercation between two groups over a piece of land led to maligning the Ambedkar statue in 2013.  In the incident, 10 persons were taken into custody. 

Local legislator S V S N Varma, former legislator Pendem Dora Babu, ZPTC Barla Appa Rao and others reached the place and gathered information on the incident.  They poured milk on the statue. 

Dalit union leaders staged a dharna and demanded stern action against the perpetrator of the offence. They also raised slogans gainst the government.
