Vijayawada: Krishna District Collector Babu A and Commissioner of Police Gautam Sawang on Wednesday skipped a meeting to commemorate sacrifices of Armed Forces and seek contributions for the welfare of ex-servicemen, Flag Day.
Their action caused pain to the senior citizens, most of them ex-servicemen.
Speakers at the meeting, which was delayed by an hour for the arrival of Collector and CP, fumed at the way the ex-servicemen were treated by the two top officials.
Kanaka Rao, a retired Armed Forces employee, wondered why the Collector and CP had failed to spare five minutes out of their valuable time for ex-servicemen after giving an appointment.
“Are the ex-servicemen not worthy to share some time with them? Their absence shows how they are neglecting those who had protected the nation by staying at borders braving adverse weather conditions,” he lamented.
Col Rambabu who presided over the Flag Day meeting said that the absence of the two officials was ‘condemnable’. Value in society for defence personnel was on the wane, he regretted.
Stating that soldiers had been fighting both enemies and adverse weather on the borders, he said that the government should give job opportunities for ex-servicemen.
Subrahmanyam, a businessman, said defence personnel were guarding the borders to keep us safe. However, 85 per cent of ex-servicemen have no housing.
He welcomed ex-servicemen to work in his group as he feels there would be no retirement for them. He contributed Rs 50,000 for Flag
Day fund.
Trinath Reddy of Sri Maitri Foundation announced that his NGO would be honouring Veerachakra T Pothuraju with ‘Telugu Jati Keerthi Pataka’ award which carries cash reward of Rs 15 lakh.
The programme will be held at Zilla Parishad High School, Vellanki in Veerulapadu mandal in the district at 5 pm on December 12.
Referring to the two officials absence at the meeting, Trinath regretted that he, along with Sainik Welfare Officer Raja Rao, struggled for one week for CP’s appointment for the programme.
The ex-servicemen on dais released a poster on Telugu Jati Keerthi Pataka on the
occasion.
Just a few minutes before the meeting came to a close, Traffic DCP Kranti Rana Tata arrived at the venue.
