Vijayawada: Food Park infrastructure development works were going on at a snail’s pace at Mallavalli village in Bapulapadu mandal of Krishna district. The Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (APIIC) is developing infrastructure for setting up of Food Park.

The Central government has sanctioned Rs 50 crore to the Food Park in order to promote agro-based industries in Andhra Pradesh. Coastal districts are rich in production of mangoes, guava, banana, coconut, chilly, dairy products, tomato and other vegetables. The APIIC is the nodal agency for the development of infrastructure in Mallavalli village. The approximate cost of the project is Rs 150 crore.

Andhra Pradesh is also registering healthy growth in food processing industry for the past few years. Keeping in view of the potential growth in the State, the Central government had sanctioned Mega Food Park to Krishna district.

Mallavalli is located in thick forest area covered with rock and small hills. Laying roads and electrical lines is not an easy task since they are located in forest area. The APIIC Zonal Manager T Visweswara Rao said the infrastructure development works may be completed in another six months in Mallavalli Food Park. He said the works are getting delayed as the Food Park site is covered with rocks and small hills in the forest area.

The Food Park site is located about three km from the road in the forest area. The Andhra Chamber of Commerce and Industry general secretary Potluri Bhaskara Rao suggested that the government should lay three km approach road to reach the Food Park in the forest. He said that the government has to take the responsibility of laying the road to attract the investors.

He said Andhra Pradesh is lagging behind in industrial development compared to Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka States in South India and take measures to develop industrial parks as early as possible. He felt the proposed Food Park will be useful to develop the food processing industry in the district and Coastal Andhra.

T Partha Saradhi, president of Andhra Pradesh small Scale industries Association, felt food processing industry will get boost with setting up of Mega Food Park in Mallavalli. He said the Andhra Pradesh is well-known for abundant production of fruits, vegetables, dairy products, aqua products and felt Food Park will be useful to both farmers and entrepreneurs.
