Kadapa: Hundreds of villages in the district are facing severe drinking water shortage prior to the summer season.

The groundwater levels have come down drastically due to insufficient rains and incompletion of irrigation projects. Situation is worse in 58 villages of Rayachoti constituency and 20 villages in Budvel constituency as people are unable to get potable water every day.

Women are forced to walk for several kilometers to secure drinking water. A farmer M Venkataramana Reddy of Chennareddypalle village told The Hans India that they were taking bath once in two days.

“Men of other areas are not willing to marry women from Rayachoti constituency because of drinking water shortage,” he stated. An official of the Rural Water Supply (RWS) department said that the situation might become worse during April and May months.

Speaking to The Hans India, District Collector K V Satyanarayana said that the State government has released Rs 3 crore against the proposals of Rs 40 crore to meet the water shortage crises in the district.

On the directions of the government, the Collector said orders were given to release 0.2 tmcft of water from Paidipalem reservoir to Proddatur town. RWS Superintendent Engineer A Sanjeeva Rao said that his department has been taking measures to supply water to villages through water tankers.
