Visakhapatnam: In order to conserve bio-diversity and protect environment, each one should plant 10 saplings and every school should take interest to train 50 Green Corps, said Minister for Roads and Buildings Ch Ayyanna Patrudu while participating in the 68th Vanam-Manam programme at Kambaala Konda on Saturday.

After planting saplings, along with Collector Pravin kumar, the Minister said, “The government is willing to increase the green cover from 24 per cent to 50 per cent by 2029. For the same, Vanam-Manam and Neeru-Chettu programmes are being taken up in a big way.

” He called upon the every gram panchayat to plant 500 saplings, which would be distributed and maintained for first three months by the government. Expressing happiness over growth of greenery in Visakhapatnam after Hudhud disaster, the Minister said it became possible because of people’s participation.

Speaking on the occasion, the Collector pinned hopes on achieving 50 per cent green cover target as Visakhaptanam district has already 43 per cent greenery. “We have set the target for this financial year to plant 2.5 crore saplings such as teak, coffee, silver oak, including in the limits of ITDA,” he said.

Chief conservator of forests Rahul Pandey asked the students and parents to take part in massive sapling plantation drive.
Prizes were distributed to students, who won competitions, conducted to mark the Vanam-Manam programme.MLA Velgapudi Ramakrishna Babu, Joint Collector G Srujana, GVMC Commissioner Hari Narayanan, forest officer P Suryanarayana, Zoo curator Vijay Kumar, district staff and several students in large numbers attended the event.
