​Vijayawada: The state government entered into an agreement with the Union government for replacement of 10 lakh conventional streetlights with energy efficient LED streetlighting in 7,024 gram panchayats in the initial phase, which is a great boon for overall welfare of the people and economic development of villages.

In the presence of chief secretary Dinesh Kumar, the panachayat raj department officials entered into a tripartite agreement here on Monday for ‘Panchayat LED streetlighting’, under which the panchayats are expected to save around Rs 165 crore without any upfront investment from the state government.

The government shall invest around Rs 245 crore to complete the project in nine months and provide free repair and maintenance of streetlights for 10 years. Panchayat raj department commissioner B Ramanjeneyulu said that the state had decided to formulate district-level and mandal-level committees consisting of officials from his department. Several officials were present.
