Hyderabad: YSR Congress Party leaders have hit upon a new idea to catapult their party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy into the seat of power in 2019.
Party senior leader Bhumana Karunakar Reddy on Saturday launched a two-year-long Maha Rudra Sahita Sahasra Chandiyagam here to see his leader in the top seat.
This yagam would continue till the next general election and is being conducted under the guidance of noted Vedic Scholar Shivarama Prasada Sharma and his brothers.
When asked why the YSRCP who wants to come to power in Andhra Pradesh was conducting the yagam in Hyderabad, the party leaders said there was no specific reason.
They have been told that the venue where it is being performed is considered to be a holy place, Karunakar Reddy said. “Politically the situation was fast turning in favour of the party and the yagam would help in getting divine blessings,” he said.
Along with Sahasra Chandiyagam, Mahasudharshana yagam and some more would be performed. All senior leaders would take part in the yagam, Reddy added.
Meanwhile, TDP AP state secretary Gottipati Ramakrishna Prasad said whatever they may do, they cannot win over the hearts of the people of Andhra Pradesh.
He said Jaganmohan Reddy will never be accepted as Chief Minister by the people. He is a man who never stands by his assurances but keeps on day-dreaming. Performing yagas will not help him in any way, he said.
CPM AP secretary B Madhu said: “It seems the YSRCP is following the footsteps of the BJP which is a Hindutva party. We as a Communist party don't believe in such superstitions and we won't support such type of events.”
CPI AP secretary P Ramakrishna slammed the YSRCP leaders for following such beliefs. In democracy, people are the only deciding factors and by performing such yagas to become Chief Minister is nothing but ridiculing the democracy, he said. The BJP MLC Somu Veerraju, however, refused to comment.
Dr M Geyanand, Ex-MLC, Jana Vignana Vedika (JVV) said all these rituals and yagas are actually anti-democratic. If somebody wanted to become Chief Minister, he had to win the votes and hearts of the public, he said. “Resorting to religious practices and following superstitions is unconstitutional,” he said.
“Nowadays, the politicians are resorting to Vastu, Mantraas, Yagaas to fulfil their own selfish aspirations,” he said, adding that people must question these unscientific things, he added.
