Tirupati: Giving a big of relief to citizens, the APSRTC Tirupati Depot is plying city bus services between Tirupati and Chandragiri via Gandhi road. There was a demand from people for plying a city bus through Gandhi road to railway station and bus station. In the wake of restrictions imposed by the police on the entry of seven-seater autos into city limits, people were facing many difficulties with no public transport between Tirupati and Chandragiri.
APSRTC had sought permission from Traffic police to operate city services through Gandhi Road. After getting their nod, the RTC was operating services in the last three days.
APSRTC Tirupati–1 depot has allotted four SML buses to run through the narrow curves in the city. These four buses are making 44 tripsbetween Tirupati and Chandragiri in both up and return directions. The services will start from APSRTC Central Bus Station and proceed towards Railway Station, Karnal Street, Prakasam Road, Balaji Colony, Thummalagunta cross, Cherlopalli, Kalur Cross, Tondavada to reach Chandragiri. In return direction, from Prakasam Road it will go via Gandhi road, G Car Street, TP Area and will reach Bus Station. The minimum fare was fixed at Rs10 and the maximum at Rs20.
In-charge Deputy Traffic Manager M Bhaskar Reddy told The Hans India the controllers were employed at important stages. They will monitor the situation continuously and give feedback to higher authorities, based on which additional services will be run whenever there is a heavy demand.
“We could not run City buses in several other routes as they are not feasible.
In some routes, there will be no demand and in some others, the roads are too narrow,” he maintained. On the other hand, there are 26 other services between Renigunta and Chandragiri which will run in the old route via Ruia Hospital from Town Club circle instead of coming to Gandhi road. Sri Kalahasti Depot was also running two services till Chandragiri.
In total, the RTC is operating 70 buses, said Assistant Manager (Traffic) KCG Bhaskar. A passenger D Krishnama Naidu, who was coming from Chandragiri for shopping on the busy Gandhi road, said, “RTC services are more comfortable than the congested auto journey in which they used to take around 15 passengers. City bus is also safe. With Rs40, I can come here and go back after my shopping.”
