Vijayawada: In a major breakthrough, the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) jointly busted a five-member inter-State criminal gang at the railway station here on Monday and recovered gold articles worth Rs 60 lakh weighing 2.1 kg.

The five-member gang, which hails from Haryana, had involved in robbery cases in trains in various parts of Andhra Pradesh and other parts of India. The gang members travel in trains as passengers and cleverly rob gold ornaments from the suitcases and bags of co-passengers.

GRP Superintendent K V Mohana Rao and Divisional Security Commissioner S R Gandhi produced the five-member gang before the media on Monday.

The gang members are Rajendra Kumar alias Vivek Yadav of Sorki village, Hisar district, Anil Kumar alias Motu alias Sohil Goyal of Hisar district, Ramesh Kumar alias Titu of Bivani district, Sunil Kumar alias Sanjay of North West Delhi and Sandeep alias Badal of Rohtak district, Haryana.

Railway Superintendent of Police Mohana Rao said the gang robbed gold ornaments in the trains under the railway police station limits of Vijayawada, Chirala, Rajamahendravaram, Bhimavaram, Gudivada, Guntur and Vizag.

The GRP police registered cases related to theft of gold articles in the trains. The gang members travel as passengers in air-conditioned and other coaches and keep watch on rich passengers and cleverly open the suitcases and bags with keys and rob the gold ornaments.

After robbing the gold articles, they immediately pass them on to other gang members and later they alight at the railway stations. The SP said the offenders dress up as common passengers so that other passengers have no suspicion.

The gang members had earlier robbed gold articles and cases were booked in Secunderabad, Haryana, Gujarat and other parts of the State. The gold articles recovered by the police include gold chains, bead chains with diamond worth Rs 1.2 lakh, earrings, finger rings, gold lockets, gold ear studs, gold necklaces, gold bangles, gold bracelet, silver bowl, silver glasses, black beads chain and others.

The Superintendent of Police appealed to the train passengers to be on high alert while travelling in the trains and take care of their valuables particularly the gold articles. He said the gang would be produced in the court. He announced awards and rewards to the staff for busting the criminal gang and recovering gold articles worth Rs 60 lakh.
