Rains expose loopholes in drainage system

Srikakulam: Low lying areas and roads are being inundated with rain water during every monsoon due to lack of proper drainage system and encroachment of old channels by private persons.
Even for moderate rainfall water is being stagnated in colonies and on roads at Varam Colony, Balaga, Dwarakanagar, Illisupuram, Hudco Colony, Bondilipuram, Tilaknagar, Bankers Colony, Mahalaxminagar, LBS Colony, DCCB Colony, Chinnamandala Veedhi, Konna Veedhi, Indiranagar Colony, Karra Veedhi, Sana Veedhi, Radhakrishna Nagar, Millu Junction, Gara Veedhi, Visakha-A and Visakha-B Colonies.
Rain and drain water are not receding properly due to encroachments of old channels and other minor channels in these colonies. Development of the city was leading to encroachment of channels, officials’ apathy and lack of proper drainage plan are the reasons for stagnation of rain water.
Hence, mosquito related diseases are spreading in the city during rainy season. Two drains were proposed in the city i.e; open and underground. Open drain is to clear rain water and underground drain is to clear drain water.
Open drain was proposed at an estimated cost of Rs Rs 119 crore covering 70 km across the city to flush out rain water. Underground drainage was proposed at an estimated cost of Rs 150 crore and covers 140 km comprising residential colonies in the city. But both the drains remain on paper.
“We are unable to reside in our houses during rainy season due to stagnation of water in front of our houses for months together”, said Tammineni Anuradha and Chintada Sanjivi, residents of Illisupuram and DCCB Colony.
“The government is yet to give its nod for both open and underground drains in the city”, municipal commissioner R Sriramulu Naidu told The Hans India.
