Srikakulam: Lack of proper vision and unscientific drainage system is posing a threat to public health in Srikakulam city. Despite the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s visit on August 15 for Independence Day celebrations at Srikakulam, the officials did not initiate proper steps to improve drainage system in the city.

The officials remained confined to temporary works like silt removing in the drains. Underground and storm water drainage system were remained on papers for the last 15 years. One is to clear regular drain water and other is to clear rain water during the season. Private persons are also constructing houses violating all established rules.

They are encroaching old irrigation channels such as Mirthi Batti, Verribatti and Narayanapuram, which are passing through the town. As a result, low-lying areas in the city are being inundated at Illisupuram, RTC complex and Balaga. Poor planning in laying of roads and drains are leading to inundation during every rainy season. District officials initiated exercise for repairs of drains and roads across the city in the wake of Chief Minister’s visit for Srikakulam to participate Independence Day celebrations.

“The officials are confined to repairs but not concentrating on permanent solutions. We have sent proposals for underground and storm water drains to clear rain and drain water on quick pace but we are waiting for government funds,” said municipal engineer, M Venkateswara Rao.
