Vijayawada: More youth are facing psychological problems in the today’s competitive world, said noted psychiatrist Dr Indla Rama Subba Reddy.

Addressing the health education programme on ‘Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World’ organised as part of the Mental Health Awareness Celebrations Week at Vasavya Nursing Home here on Saturday with Dr G Samaram in the chair, Dr Rama Subba Reddy said that youth are prone to commit suicide unable to cope with the tension, stress, fear and anxiety.

Many people are facing the psychological problems at tender age of below 14 years, he said and added depression is in the third place in mental ailments. According to the psychiatrist, several suicides were registered in the age group of 15-29.

Expressing concern over the growing drug addiction and alcoholism among youth, he said that this led to behavioural problem and to unprotected sexual activities.

The youth are also indulging in rash and negligent driving due to the imbalance in their behaviour, the psychiatrist said and added that they were also turning obese due to unhealthy eating habits.

The psychiatrist attributed the depression among youth to faulty education system as they were not securing employment even after studying hard.

“The pathetic issue is that these young people do not have necessary skills to overcome the problems resulting in depression which in turn leading to suicide,” he added.
