Ongole: The state government is giving utmost priority to the welfare of backward classes, announced the joint collector of the Prakasam district, S Nagalakshmi.

She participated as the chief guest to the celebrations of Valmiki Jayanti at the Old ZP Meeting Hall on Wednesday.

Nagalakshmi said that though Valmiki born into a poor family and became a thief for the livelihood, he wrote Ramayana as per the orders of Maharshi Narada and explained the importance of family system in society.

She encouraged the students to read Ramayana and learn the lessons of life.

She said that the state government has announced the birthday of Valmiki as the state festival and implementing Adarana scheme through the BC Corporation.

She said that the BC associations are being offered a loan of Rs 10 to 20 lakh while the students are being offered Rs 10 lakh for education in foreign countries.

She said that apart from the scholarships and fees reimbursement, the BC students are provided well equipped hostels by the social welfare department.

The trainee collector Nisanthi, DRO Venkata Subbaiah, Ongole RDO P Kishore, BC Welfare Officer Lakshmi Durga, tribal welfare officer Rajyalakshmi, minority welfare officer Jhansi, Nayi Brahmin Federation director P Venkateswarlu and other BC leaders also participated in the program.
