Eluru: District Collector Praveen Kumar has directed the officials of the panchayat department officials to keep villages clean by freeing the streets from garbage.

He convened a meeting on health and hygiene in villages apart from other issues here on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said that keeping villages clean was the prime responsibility of the panchayats.

As garbage was the cause of spreading deadly diseases, the panchayats should ensure that no garbage traces are found on the streets. The garbage should be dumped in dumping yards, he ordered.

He asked sanitation staff to report to duties at 5 in the morning and collect garbage from various houses.

After finishing the collection, they should shift it to the dumping yard. At the same time, they should involve themselves in the solid waste management activity.

He ordered the officials to start construction of remaining 13 solid waste management sheds in the district immediately.

Reviewing tax collections, the Collector expressed dissatisfaction over the poor collection of property tax.

Out of targeted Rs 130 crore taxes in panchayats, only Rs 19 crore was collected so far, he informed.

District Panchayat Officer R Vithal, divisional panchayat officials and others were present.
